Specification sheets celebrate peak boost clocks. Production work happens at sustained load, and sustained load is decided by power delivery and cooling long before the silicon runs out of headroom.
Thermals set the ceiling
A GPU that boosts to its peak for thirty seconds and then settles 10% lower is normal — and predictable. Good case airflow and a well-chosen fan curve keep that settled point as high as possible, which is where render farms and long training runs actually live.
Practical balance
Budget for airflow first: intake, exhaust, and clearance around the card. Set a power limit you can cool all day. The performance you lose at the peak you gain back in consistency — and consistency is what deadlines are made of.
